The siting and design of a staircase was the principal generator for this project, which proposed a new living space and music studio for a 1930’s apartment building in Fitzroy. The staircase acts as both circulation and light well, funneling sunlight into the existing kitchen and dining room. Furthermore, the vertical surfaces of the staircase extend beyond the circulation spine to envelop the rooms above.
