Specialist Disability Accommodation _ Box Hill VIC. Australia _ Completed 2020

Box Hill SDA Housing began as a social and affordable housing project and evolved into two highly tailored homes for four young people with complex support needs.

Originally developed for Housing Choices Australia as part of its broader housing portfolio, the project was reconsidered when a group of four families approached HCA seeking Specialist Disability Accommodation for their teenage children. The existing design was adapted to meet SDA Robust category requirements, with two residents accommodated in each dwelling and a third bedroom provided for a carer. The front house was planned for two teenage girls and the rear house for two teenage boys.

The design was developed in close consultation with the families to understand each resident’s individual needs, including bedroom arrangement, bathroom requirements and opportunities for retreat. Generous bedrooms incorporate space for sitting and privacy, while north-facing living areas provide light and connection to outdoor space. Although both dwellings are two storeys, upper-level accommodation is contained within the roof form, allowing the houses to sit comfortably within the surrounding low-rise neighbourhood.
